[Design concept]

The front of the medal features landscape designs reflecting Kyoto’s changing seasons, integrated with scenery familiar to those who run the marathon or have toured Kyoto.

The back is adorned with a noshi pattern, which is a traditional Japanese celebratory theme. This noshi pattern comprises nine strings depicting a finish line tape and previous years’ medal ribbons to signify the 9th Marathon.

The visual contrast between the green front and the red back of the medal is a tribute to hakkake*1 and han-eri*2, embodying the gracefulness of Kyoyuzen.

*1 Hakkake is the fabric that is joined to the lining and attached to the backs of the sleeves and hems of women’s lined kimono.
*2 Han-eri is the replacable neckpiece sewn onto the juban, which is the garment worn under kimono.
